2009 Graduate
Otolaryngology
Pediatric Otolaryngologist
Michigan Pediatric ENT Asso
Clarkston, MI

Dr. Haupert's desire to pursue a career in medicine was inspired by a couple of life-altering events during college. He was involved in a serious automobile accident and was later diagnosed with cancer. The medical professionals who treated him profoundly influenced his future aspirations. Dr. Haupert went on to complete a residency in otolaryngology and a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology. Presently he is an associate clinical professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine and chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Children's Hospital of Michigan. The rapidly changing dynamics in medicine spurred his interest in pursuing an MBA degree. Dr. Haupert strongly feels that physicians need to understand the business constraints facing medicine. His ultimate goal is to help in the process of making medicine economically sound, accessible, and improve quality and innovation.

Dr. Hecht managed the group as Chief Executive Officer and presided over its continued success and growth for the following four years during which the group continued to expand. Another inpatient hospitalist, three outpatient internists, and two nurse practitioners were added during that interval. In 2008, Dr. Hecht left private practice to accept the position of Chief of General Surgery at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City/Mountain Home, Tennessee. He graduated from Loyola University Cardiothoracic Fellowship and stayed on as faculty for one year. He then went into private practice in Lima, Ohio, for five years and recently moved to St. Johns in Springfield, Missouri, to practice with a great group of world class cardiovascular surgeons. Student PhotoChandresh Viradia, MD
2009 Graduate
Anesthesiology
Medical Director
Nexus Medical Group
Macon, GA

Dr. Viradia's first exposure to medicine began at the University of Tennessee. On his light research days, he would accompany the anesthesia residents into the operating room. His expose to the intense dynamics at the head of the table would later lead him to pursue training to be an anesthesiologist. He soon realized that he could practice a sub-specialty of anesthesia, and effectively treat the most common cause of doctor office visits each year—pain. Practicing hospital based anesthesia and pain for a few years in the real world didn't require much business sense except for certain tact in dealing with hospital administrators and surgeons. But eventually, after transitioning to 100% outpatient pain practice, he realized that although he was able to successfully start and grow a pain practice, the extra business edge and ideology were lacking. Then, after much discussion with his wife and business partners, the decision was made to pursue an MBA. This led back to the place where it all started, the University of Tennessee.

Student PhotoBarry Lewis, MD
2009 Graduate
Anesthesiology
Faculty
Washington Hospital Center
Washington, DC

Dr. Lewis dreamed of saving a human life some day. No particular event initiated this desire, but the childhood dream of saving a victim from drowning was sufficient motivation. The beach never offered the opportunity for glory and the lack of swimming skills was the true thief of this initial objective. His alternative was medical school. He spent four years in undergraduate training at Vanderbilt, then four at the University of Tennessee-Memphis for medical school, and then trained at Johns Hopkins in anesthesiology. During ten years of practice, Dr. Lewis became very skillful and was able to direct the perioperative care of the sickest patients. Creating a system to save one patient at a time was enjoyable but not life fulfilling. Dr. Lewis' desire was to combine clinical knowledge with business acumen to positively impact multiple lives including those providing the care.

Student PhotoAdnan Abel, MD
2009 Graduate
Internal Medicine
Associate Professor, Medicine
Kuwait University
Safat,

In 1983 Dr. Abel got his medical degree from Kuwait University and in 1991 he graduated from the University of Toronto with a fellowship in pulmonary medicine. When Dr. Adnan returned back home after the first Gulf War the responsibility given to him by the ministry of health was huge. He had to develop state of the art respiratory unit and study the effect of oil well fire. Despite the difficulty of bureaucracy in the third world, he accomplished his task with reasonable success. After 10 years Dr. Adnan was given the opportunity to be the medical director of a private hospital and with the help of highly motivated employees he was successful in making the hospital one of the top health care providers in Kuwait. Aware of new competitors entering the market and with the collapse of Kuwait public hospitals that will be privatized, PEMBA will help Dr. Adnan to gain powerful managerial knowledge and skills to continue to be one of the top medical leaders in the country and face the new challenges, by either opening a consultation office or becoming an executive for an important hospital.

Even though Dr Carrillo is a recipient of the prestigious 2006 Businessman of the Year Award, presented nationally by President George W. A true physician leader, Dr. Harper has served in medical staff roles including Chief of Childrens Hospital and Chief of Staff of the entire Palmetto Health Richland system. Outside of her roles at Palmetto Health, Greta is the current Vice President of the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. While serving in these physician administrative roles, Dr. Harper has discovered new energy and desire to better understand and improve systems and processes that impact on the care delivered to patients that Palmetto Health Ricland serves. She feels that pursing formal advance studies in areas such as finance and strategic planning in pursuit of a MBA will enhance her current talents as she envisions leaving the clinical arena and practicing as a full time physician hospital administrator such as Vice President of Medical Affairs in the near future.
